October School Board Meeting Recap

Hello, Warner School Community!

To keep our community informed and provide greater transparency into the work of the Warner School Board, we are sharing recaps following each school board meeting. These summaries are intended to keep community members informed of important topics and ongoing discussions, especially for those who are unable to attend meetings in person.

Please note that these recaps are not intended to replace the official meeting minutes or serve as a complete record of the meeting. Instead, they highlight key topics, ongoing initiatives, and issues the Board is addressing on behalf of our district.

Old and Continuing Business

In addition to reviewing routine financial reports, bills, previous meeting minutes, and public comments, the Board continued discussions on several priorities established as part of its annual goals in July.

Board Training and Development

  • The Board plans to work with the Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD) to schedule board training for December. These training opportunities provide board members with valuable knowledge and skills to support informed decision-making and effective governance.

Bathroom Project Update

  • The Board discussed the current status of the bathroom project. Due to ongoing litigation, construction remains on hold.

  • While the timeline for resuming construction depends largely on the outcome of the legal proceedings, the district is taking proactive steps to prepare for moving forward once the matter is resolved.

  • We are working with an architect and engineers to plan the remaining phases of the project and identify the steps needed to complete construction.

  • With colder weather approaching, we are also taking steps to protect the building from South Dakota’s winter conditions while construction remains at a standstill.

  • Although the district cannot control the legal timeline, we are continuing to plan and prepare so we can move forward as efficiently as possible when circumstances allow.

Annual Goals and Student Success

The Board also revisited several priorities identified in its annual goals, including:

  • ACT and SAT preparation opportunities for students.

  • Highlighting and sharing student achievements and successes.

  • Supporting professional development opportunities for staff.

  • Warner Staff is part of a federal grant to provide access to online counseling resources for families, staff and students. We are early in the role out so more to come from the school.

 School Wellness Policy

  • Following a second reading, the Board approved an updated version of the district’s School Wellness Policy. The revised policy has been posted to the Warner school website.

New Business

Staffing Updates

  • Ms. Adalia Tate resigned from her position as elementary aide to accept a long-term substitute teaching position in the first-grade classroom.

  • The district is working to fill the vacant paraprofessional position as soon as possible. The position is posted on the employment section of the school website.

E-Sports

  • Ms. Winter has agreed to serve as the district’s E-Sports Coach/General Manager for the upcoming season.

  • Students are expected to begin preseason competitions by the end of October.

Policy Review

  • As part of the Board’s ongoing policy review process, members reviewed School Board Policies 3003, 3003.1, 3003.2, and 3003.3.

Administrative Reports and Next Meeting

The meeting concluded with administrative reports from:

  • Ms. Brockhaus, JK–8 Principal

  • Mr. Robinson, Business Manager

  • Mr. Kroll, Superintendent, Special Education Director, and Transportation Coordinator

The next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be held on November 9, 2026.
